Other Means is a graphic design studio in Brooklyn, New York. For ten years, we have collaborated with clients in the cultural sector who are interested in using design to broaden their reach and speak to new audiences. We draw from our clients’ own stories to develop dynamic visual languages that excel in digital environments.

Our studio model ensures that each member of our team can collaborate closely with each other and with our clients. This dedication means that in many of our projects we stay involved long after the roll-out, helping to steer new visual identities, design and program institutional websites, and direct seasonal campaigns. This unique way of working ensures that the visual languages we develop for our clients grow naturally over time—alongside their missions and programs— outlasting the cultural moment in which they were conceived.

APPROACH

We think of visual identities as languages, not systems. Identity systems tend to dictate rules that don’t leave room for the kind of exploration and innovation needed to accurately reflect an institution’s mission. Languages, on the other hand, have structure and rules that allow them to grow naturally, developing unique dialects while remaining familiar to those who speak them. New additions, like slang, enter into a language and live alongside commonly used words. This collision of new and old, common and novel, is what makes languages feel perpetually new. By designing visual languages in this way, we give organizations the tools they need to continue evolving and give audiences an opportunity to witness and take part in that growth over time.

WHY US?

We combine a depth of knowledge from the traditional art world with a genuine curiosity about the actual—and speculative—potentials of blockchain technology and decentralized organizing structures. We see this project as an opportunity to challenge what an organization like Fingerprints DAO *could* look like, and a desire to establish a new standard for the visual language of blockchain-based cultural projects.
